Who hasn’t dreamt about getting out of bed and finding that the bathroom heater has turned on automatically? Or for their favorite song to play when they get in the car? Or getting a message to remind them to water their plants at the right time? A few years ago this would have all seemed like science fiction, but now it is real.
Since the emergence and growth of smartphones we have gained greater control over our environment and our lives via the phone. It started by getting work emails and logging onto the internet, but now we can say that the last thing we do with our phones is place a call.
There are currently hundreds of applications that let us control everything from our cell, as if we were carrying a service center around with us. And when I say everything, I really do mean everything. You could almost think you were living in an episode of Black Mirror.
Below are some of the apps that can save you time and ensure you have everything regarding the state of your house to hand, no matter where you are.
I hope you find them useful!
In addition to these fantastic apps that I have no doubt will make your life easier, I also wanted to talk about another application, this one called IFTTT, or If This Then That. This app, rather than offer a new service, lets you synchronize your apps and mobile services to create very interesting combinations. For example, you can turn on the porch lights when you order a pizza over a mobile app; send a message to your flatmates when you’re close to the supermarket; or turn on the coffee maker when your cellphone alarm rings. Isn’t that great?
