The Kirin fire pit: The attractive, sustainable pool heater

Two things that at first might seem as different as water and fire come together to form a perfect partnership thanks to one of the groups participating in this year’s Innovation Week. Núria Cornejo (Metalast), Edgar Alastrué (Fluidra Thailand Export), and Elena Balykova (Fluidra Kazakhstan) worked on a groundbreaking project that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is functional: Kirin, an attractive solution to cut energy consumption and contribute to environmental protection.

“Our baseline was the wish to drive energy sustainability but because there are many products targeted at that we found ourselves somewhat limited. However, our research found that the biggest energy cost with a pool is the heat pump so that’s what we took as the starting point for this idea. Considering that pools are an ornamental feature in a home, we decided to include a decorative feature in the pool which could also be harnessed to cut energy costs.” (Núria Cornejo)

The idea is based on the design of a decorative fire pit to heat the water, powered by burning biodegradable materials.

Kirin wasn’t ultimately chosen as one of the winners of Innovation Week, but the jury was very interested in the idea and decided to study its feasibility at Fluidra.
